Hello again,
I had my first year anniversary for ShellieWrites on June 10th. Substack suggested that I reshare one of my earliest posts which many new readers may not have seen. They picked this one as a good example. I agree.
I have tweaked it a bit and adding a voiceover which wasn’t available last June. Here goes:
I mentioned in my first post that I was studying and practicing Astrology before it was fashionable. That was an understatement. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, Astrology was only the sun sign forecast in the newspaper that most considered entertainment. If people knew you were an actual Astrologer, even in the 1970s, you were labeled weird, and often called a witch…a word that didn’t have the positive PR it has now.
But somehow in the mid-70s I found myself working for a big PR firm in NYC. It was unusual because it had many female account execs and, I would learn, two psychics running what is now called the Human Resource department.
On my first day, I found a chart wheel with unfathomable hieroglyphics on my desk. I knew what it was and was somewhat more familiar with astrology than the daily newspaper sun sign forecast. But this was way beyond me and not at all what I would expect to see at work.
When I asked why it was on my desk, Barbara, my boss, said she was going with some of the other Execs to an astrology class nearby. She had just learned how to set up the chart (back then, it involved many calculations, including logarithms, and more). If I wanted to know what the chart said, which of course I did, Barbara suggested I take a different exec to lunch in exchange for a reading of my birth chart.

Sue was very gracious. Over our meal, she used the chart to reveal my nature and what went wrong in last my relationship. She knew it was unusual that I was also asking questions about how she was seeing these things. Because of this, and some aspects she saw in my chart, when lunch was over, we took a short walk to one of the two ‘occult bookstores’ in Manhattan where they were taking classes. She bought me my first book.
I wasn’t a ‘morning person,’ but I’d get up early to read the book before leaving for work. And I knew I’d have to learn and use those mathematics to set up charts. Not keen on that subject, but willing, it was clear Astrology was meant for me.
Not long after, information in the book gave rise to questions. I hadn’t warmed to the owner of the Bookstore but I knew I needed a teacher. Serendipity came in the form of a new friend. He introduced me to an Astrologer who would become my beloved mentor/teacher. I spent about two years going across town (later up from Park Slope) to the not yet fashionable Upper West Side, to take weekly classes with Richard.
When I was ready to practice, it was still unusual to be an Astrologer and when some people discovered this, they left my life. I think it was lucky that my family never judged me, and some even wanted readings.
They were surprised, but still accepting when this study led me to many other places on what some at that time would call ‘the road less travelled.’ What I found on that road was enriching and fascinating, and now widely accepted and practiced. I’ll write about acquiring those facets of my professional life in other Posts.
Astrology and the Four Elements
What I want to convey about Astrology is that, even though we can’t see the direct connection and influence of planetary movements through the 360 degrees of the Zodiac wheel, we can and do experience the effects.
The study of Astrology in the Western method I use comes down to understanding the nature of the Four Elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water, and how they relate to each other. Each of the four elements has three ways of expressing. That’s why we have twelve signs, which evenly divide the 360-degree circle. I will go further into this in another astrology post.
In the meantime, you can find daily Astrology forecast posts on my Astralessence Facebook page and a podcast for the Weekly Astrology Forecast on the Blog page of my website. There you can sign up for the Blog email list to get those podcasts in your email at Noon Eastern on Sundays.
And since I wrote this, I’ve also added a Moondays Report that highlights the signs and phases of the Moon and their meanings, along with some daily forecasts, Lunar and Planetary Events, and a section with the podcast link. It posts on Sunday evenings.
And finally, the Author in me wants to shift gears to share the news that I received the link to a wonderful online print interview. I want to share it with you. Liz Ambrico has a website called WordyTips.com, a source for learning about Authors, their methods and motivation for the books they publish, and their advice for other writers. I think she did a beautiful job and asked great questions. You can see and read “Meet Shellie Enteen” HERE. And you can find the Revealing the Druid Legacy series on Amazon.
See you next time!
Your involvement with astrology was simply "meant to be." In fact, it was probably in the stars!
