The birth of agriculture brought with it a new relationship with the land. I was just reading a thesis (from a mid-20th century scholar) that posited that the explosion of symbolic forms coinciding with the birth of agriculture can be read as the human mind being rewired to assume greater control over our environment than during paleolithic times, when humanity was dependent on the natural world, though we engaged in rituals and magic in an attempt to propitiate Nature to shower her beneficence. While agriculture requires a strong connection to the land, the nature of that connection was fundamentally changed.

With the industrial revolution, humans became increasingly alienated from their natural environment (and from the context of myth that had previously provided a coherent worldview).

As we launch into a new (information) age and potentially a new era, the question arises: what will this mean for our relationship with Mother Earth?
