Moments in the Flow—Mars Goes Direct in Cancer
Hello again,
For those of you who haven’t heard this before, when a planet is in retrograde the energy is said to be internalized. From our point of view (not actually) the planet appears to be going backward over a section of the sky. And during this internalized time, we are going back over recently covered ground and processing events, communications, and activities that took place during the direct phase.
Once the planet resumes direct motion, it takes a short while to get back up to speed. We use this time getting ready to move forward with whatever our ruminating period has uncovered and suggested as the way to proceed. Action is likely to begin while the planet goes over this portion of the sky for the third time. Then the planet, and we, move on.
The Facts About This Retrograde of Mars
Red planet Mars gives us our passion, desire, motivation, literal muscles and movement. It shows where, why and how we express anger, ambition, and sexuality. In 2024, it entered the sensitive water sign of Cancer on September 4th. It travelled through the sign of home, family, the country as our larger family, and our need for both emotional and material security. It inflamed patriotism in whatever direction the group we relate to deemed right.
It shifted into the steady fire of Leo on November 5th, the day of the US Presidential Election. The sign of Leo, the lion-king of the jungle, provides for itself and its family/kingdom. It is a sign of creative self- expression, romance, children, entertainment and investment. Mars moved slowly up to 6 degrees of Leo and retrograded there a month later, on December 6th.
Specific degrees and dates for retrograde and direct:
· We began 2025 with Mars retrograde at 1 degree of Leo and then it moved back into Cancer on January 6th.
· It began slowing down at 19 degrees Cancer on February 2nd
· After 12 days on the 17th degree of Cancer, it goes direct on February 23rd.
· The period we have revisited began when Mars first entered the 17th degree of Cancer on October 5th
· It includes all the time thereafter until this 2025 direct motion begins.
· On March 8th, Mars will move off the 17th degree of Cancer
· It moves through this sign to reenter Leo on April 18th.
· A volatile Mars opposed to Pluto, will take place at 3 degrees Leo to Aquarius
· This occurs on April 26th.
· We move on to new ground when Mars enters 7 Leo.
· This takes place on May 4th.
The Outer Expression of Mars Direct in Cancer
We may all experience planetary energies in specific events in our personal lives. But the population of a country (also ruled by Cancer and the Moon) may witness and/or be affected by events in the outer world, too.
Since Cancer is a sign of food and nourishment, including the stomach and the mucous membranes of the digestive system, the retrograde of this fire-planet brought a slow, irritating burn that was sourced by fear of losing security.
In the US we experienced food shortages for certain basics, like eggs, and we saw grocery prices rising. The interest rate had affected homebuying and across the board price raising made repairs and appliances go up in price. The soup was on simmer and stayed there building up more and more heat.
When Mars moves direct the heat will build quickly and it is likely that the soup will boil over at some point during this direct motion in Cancer. It may culminate with a volatile event at the Mars Pluto opposition on April 26th. Making this more likely is that Mercury; our mind, thinking and communications, will enter the Mars ruled sign of Aries on April 16th and the Sun is already there, too. Hot heads and angry expressions; acting quickly and without thinking about consequences are a widespread potential.
The Sun’s entry into fixed earth sign Taurus on the 19th will engage in challenges with Mars and Pluto, too. Taurus adds the topics of money and geophysical events, which may be the areas that instigate the Mars Pluto opposition’s effects.
But which soup(s) boils over in our lives and in the outer world remains to be seen. Astrology can give us information by looking at the charts for places where the transit of Mars in Cancer, early Leo and this exact Mars Pluto opposition take place, for countries and for individuals.
Knowing How to Bring the Heat Down
It’s hard to avoid all the news and the political atmosphere in the US and many other countries. Many people have decided to ignore it and that may help them attain more inner peace. But being aware of certain events and their potential may be important. Certainly, knowing that these astrological energies are in play can help us decide how to avoid creating or being part of the negative expressions springing from tensions and fear.
